A study for the Trivulzio monument, with the rearing horse resting its forelegs on a vanquished enemy.
Today only Leonardo's notes and drawings for the horse survive. The molds were made, They disappeared. Even the wonderful earthen full-scale model of it was lost - to the arrows of the French invader. Leonardo's drawing has been enlarged and placed upon a schematic base, the size and placement of which, however, is merely a speculation. The monument is projected into the courtyard of the Sforza Castle, the proper proportions having been taken into consideration.
